Day of The Dead Photo Workshop Day 2: Teotitlan del Valle

Today, after the edit and critique from the first day of shooting we headed to Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca. We visited the home of a family of weavers and captured them at work. I will not deny that it was really hard for me to get good shots in this house and still believe I did not walk away with THE photo I was looking for… but then again very rarely I do 🙂

Next we went to the house of Sofi, a family that creates candles by hand. The shooting was either a bit easier or I was more in the mood, who knows… in any case the pictures that I liked the most were those of Sofi’s mother… you see and judge. Finally we went to the town’s church and got a pretty decent photo… remote indirect flash towards the cross held by lead instructor Ken Garret.

Here are the pictures… Enjoy!

Day of the Dead Workshop in Oaxaca Day 1: Montealbán and Santo Domingo Church and Museum

I am amazed at our country’s beauty. Having been living abroad for 7 years now makes me enjoy and see Mexico from another perspective. We have started our Photography Workshop for the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s most beautiful cities. The workshop is co-produced by my company, Photo Xpeditions and National Geographic Expeditions. Students come from various latitudes: California, Arizona, Florida, Holland and Mexico City to mention a few.

On our first day we had a presentation of Kenneth Garrett’s work in Egypt and the Americas, from Mexico to Patagonia. Raul Touzon also presented his fabulous work split in three parts: 1) a recent documentary on the Everglades that was published this month in the Spanish version of the National geographic Magazine, 2) A compilation of some of his top photos of Mexico; and 3) Some of his underwater photos. All of the students seemed to enjoy the tremendous display of talent by both photographers.

On my end, here are some of the photos that I was able to capture yesterday in Montealban and the beautiful church of Santo Domingo and its museum, I hope you enjoy them….

My Favorite Water Polo Photo

IN mid January the Lake Brantley high school water polo tournament took place. The Weather was cold and it allowed for some spectacular scenery in the early mornings…. I shot this picture (one of a series) at around 7:30 am against the rising sun. The vapor coming out of the swimming pool makes the image more dramatic…. as it turned out my son’s (pictured here) team won the tournament and went on to an undefeated season all the way to the state championship. I call this picture Gorill ain the Mist:

Earlier this year I sent out this picture to a sports photo contest… 🙂

Water Polo Pictures

I discovered this sport as my son decided to play something far from where I could give my opinion… As it turns out, we became passionate about the sport and we are more into it than he and us ever expected to! I have to admit that shooting water polo is not the easiest task but over the past 3 years I have taken some pictures that I like better than the rest and here are some ….

Mexico’s Ruta Maya Photo Adventure

Ruta Maya was the first photo tour we operated in partnership with National Geographic Expeditions as a a company with Photo Xpeditions. The tour was great and full of stories. The photo opportunities were fantastic and we had tons of fun. All our guests seemed to have had a blast. For 2010, we are reviving this tour on our own under the concept of Small Group Learning with a more personalized approach and a lower student to instructor ratio, for more information please visit www.photoxpeditions.com. Ruta Maya was led by Raul Touzon (www.touzonphoto.com) as the Lead Photographer, Cristina Llerena (www.crisllerena.com) as second instructor. I was the tour manager. Following some of the pictures that I took during that trip back in January/February, 2008.

On the Way of St. James Familiarization Trip

One year ago we embarked in on a familiarization trip to put together an amazing itinerary for a Photography Workshop, The Way of St. James in Northern Spain on board the Transcantabric Train. The trip excelled our expectations, the sighting are breath-taking, the train beautiful, fun and sumptuous, the service on board the train unbeatable and the gastronomy unsurpassed. At the end, the trip did not turn out to be  a Photography Workshop but it did become a National Geographic Expeditions Journey by Private Train that our company, Photo Xpeditions will run from September 30 – October 10, 2010. The experience will be enriched by a National Geographic Expert who will provide lectures throughout the entire trip as well as by National Geographic Photographer and Photo Xpeditions Co-Founder, Raul Touzon for all who wish to improve their photographic skills. If you want more information, visit www.photoxpeditions.com, in the meantime here are some of the pictures that came out of this familiarization trip while we were putting together the entire itinerary…
